After much deliberation, the winner of the STEAM Summer Enrichment session I program is…
“DR.” CAROLYN COLLINS
Every student presented their projects well. The requirements included;
- Selecting a STEAM project at the beginning of Summer Enrichment
- Conducting research on the Scientific Method for the selected project
- Providing the theories and laws that support the reasons why the project works
- Obtaining material to build the project
- Testing the project several times and recording the data
- Presenting observations to the group and panel of judges, as well as showcasing the completed build
- Stating applicable conclusions, demonstrating clear understanding of scientific laws and theories
From lava lamps to rocket ships, balloon powered race cars to solar powered ovens, there was serious competition for the STEAM prize. All students deserve a round of applause and congratulations for such a successful effort in their science projects.
It was a tough decision, but Dr. Carolyn displayed several qualities in her project, presentation, and perspective. Her ‘Rollercoaster’ project was well designed. However, the story behind the design is what gave the judges a second glance.
Collins impressed judges with her backstory and thoughtfulness. She stated that, “my family is always spending money on me, so I thought I would find ways to do this without asking for any money.” Carolyn used a sense of environmental accountability by recycling items from lunchbox leftovers to household items for use on her project.
